How to Properly Wash Your Canada Goose Jacket

Canada Goose jackets are high-quality winter coats that are designed to keep you warm in extreme cold weather conditions. However, over time, your Canada Goose jacket can accumulate dirt, body oils, and grime that can damage the outer shell and lining of the jacket. It’s important to wash your Canada Goose jacket regularly using the proper cleaning techniques to keep it in pristine condition for years to come. Here are the steps to properly wash your Canada Goose jacket:

  1. Check the care label. The first step is to check the care label on your Canada Goose jacket to determine if it is machine washable or dry clean only. Most Canada Goose jackets can be machine washed on a gentle cycle using cold water and a mild detergent. However, some styles may require dry cleaning. It’s important to follow the care instructions on the label to avoid damage.
  2. Use a front-loading washer. If machine washing, use a front-loading washer rather than a top-loader. Front-loading washers are gentler on clothes and will do less damage to the down filling and outer shell. Wash the jacket separately from other clothing to avoid piling.
  3. Choose a down-specific detergent. Select a down-specific detergent or a mild detergent that is free from dyes and bleach. Regular detergents can strip the down filling of its natural oils and damage the water-resistant coating. A down detergent will clean effectively while preserving the integrity of your down jacket.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue from the down filling. Leftover detergent can make your jacket lose loft and damage the water resistance. After rinsing, avoid twisting or wringing out the jacket which can cause damage.
  5. Tumble dry on low heat. Remove excess water by gently squeezing and then tumble drying the jacket on low heat. Add a couple of clean tennis balls to the dryer to prevent clumping. Check on the jacket frequently and remove while the down filling is still slightly damp to restore the loft and shape. Then hang dry completely.
  6. Restore water resistance (optional). For added protection, you can restore the water resistance of the jacket’s outer shell by applying a DWR (durable water resistant) treatment, available at most outdoor retailers. This is not required but can help enhance the performance of your Canada Goose jacket.

By properly washing and caring for your Canada Goose jacket, you can expect many years of superior warmth and comfort. Be sure to wash your jacket at least once a season or if it’s visibly dirty or starts to lose loft. With regular care and maintenance, your Canada Goose jacket will remain an essential part of your winter attire for the long run.
