How food banks work in Canada
In most cities, a large regional food bank collects and sorts food, then supplies smaller community food banks, church pantries, meal programs and campus food banks. Some regional food banks, like Calgary and Edmonton, also give out hampers directly. Others, like Daily Bread in Toronto, Moisson Montréal, Feed Nova Scotia, Hamilton Food Share and Harvest Manitoba, only supply partner agencies. That’s why each city page starts by telling you where to actually go.
Newcomers and international students
Food banks generally serve people in need in their area. What they usually check is identity and address, not immigration status. International students can also use their campus food bank. If you are unsure, ask the food bank when you call.
How we keep this directory accurate: in September 2026 we checked every city’s main food bank against its official website, tested every website link, and matched each community program’s phone number and address against the organization’s own site. Programs we could not confirm are clearly marked, and we don’t publish unconfirmed hours.
XVV Canada is not affiliated with any food bank listed. Always confirm details with the organization before visiting.
