if your flight is close to full, most likely they’ll ask at the gate for volunteers to check bags (for free) or will demand it as the boarding process starts and the overhead bins fill up. When you arrive to the airport, go to the agent assistance line and explain your flight is full and you’re in a later boarding group. That since they’ll be doing gate checking, please would it be possible to check your bag without a fee now instead of lugging it through the airport to the gate. I’ve only been turned down once in 3 years – in Denver, and that’s unsurprising as everything at that airport seems designed for inconvenience!
I just want others to know they can save $40+ by a reasonable ask for their own convenience when they may be forced to check the bag at the gate anyway. Caveat: With some airlines – at some locations – not Frontier or Ryanair and not in Canada since they’re nice and offer it for free apparently.
Have you ever faced a hefty baggage fee and felt your wallet weep? You’re not alone. Airlines have mastered the art of charging travellers for every little thing, and checked bags are a prime example. But fear not, fellow adventurers! There’s a simple, effective, and budget-friendly solution: ditch the checked bag and opt for a carry-on instead.
Why Carry-On is King Forget About Checked Bag
Save Money: The most obvious benefit. Checked bag fees can easily cost you $30-$50 per bag, per flight. You’ll avoid these hefty charges by packing smartly and carrying everything on board.
Speed and Convenience: Skip the baggage claim line and breeze through the airport. No more waiting around, wondering if your bag made it to its destination. You can simply grab your carry-on and head straight to your next adventure.
Control: Your belongings are with you at all times, eliminating the risk of lost or damaged luggage.
Packing Smart for Carry-On Success
The key is to be strategic with your packing. Here are some tips to ensure a comfortable and efficient carry-on experience:

Choose the Right Bag: Invest in a lightweight, durable carry-on that fits within airline size regulations. Consider a backpack for easy carrying, or a rolling suitcase for heavier loads.
Pack Light: Less is more! Don’t bring items you don’t need. Pack versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched, and opt for travel-sized toiletries.
Utilize Every Space: Roll your clothes instead of folding them to maximize space. Pack shoes in garment bags to protect your clothes and save room.
Pack Essential Items Separately: Keep important documents, medications, and valuables in your item (purse or small bag) so they’re easily accessible.
Be Prepared for Liquid Restrictions: Remember the 3-1-1 rule: liquids must be in 3.4oz containers or less, and fit in a 1 quart resealable bag.
Beyond the Practical
Packing light and carrying your belongings on board is also about taking control of your travel experience. You’re not confined by baggage weight restrictions, and you’re free to explore your destination without the burden of a heavy bag. You’ll be more agile, more spontaneous, and ultimately, more relaxed.
So, the next time you’re booking a flight, embrace the carry-on! It’s a simple, effective way to save money, gain convenience, and enjoy a more enjoyable journey.
