Costco is one of the most searched employers in Canada, and for good reason. It pays above most retailers, it offers real benefits to part-time staff, and it likes to promote from within. But getting hired is not always easy, and the work is more physical than many people expect.
Here is how Costco jobs in Canada actually work, based on what Costco has said publicly and what the job involves day to day.
What jobs does Costco have?
A Costco warehouse is like several businesses under one roof. That means many different jobs:
| Area | Common job titles |
|---|---|
| Front end | Cashier Assistant, Front End Assistant, Cashier |
| Floor & stock | Stocker, Merchandising, Receiving |
| Fresh food | Bakery, Deli, Produce, Meat Wrapper, Meat Cutter |
| Food court | Food Service Assistant |
| Services | Membership, Tire Centre, Gas Station, Optical, Hearing Aid, Pharmacy |
| Behind the scenes | Maintenance, Loss Prevention, Depot and head office roles |
Some jobs need a licence or training. Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, opticians, and hearing instrument practitioners must be registered in their province. Meat cutting and tire work often need experience. Most other entry-level jobs do not.
What a Cashier Assistant does
This is the job many people start with. You stand at the end of a checkout lane and help the cashier. You pack items into boxes or carts, check that big items are rung in, and keep the lane moving. You also collect carts from the parking lot, clean up, and help members carry heavy things.
It is simple work, but it is fast and physical. You are on your feet for your whole shift. You will lift cases of water, bags of dog food, and boxes of all sizes. In winter, the parking lot is cold.
How to apply for a job at Costco Canada
- Go to costco.ca and click Jobs at the bottom of the page.
- Search the open jobs. You can pick a location near you.
- Create an account and fill in the application. This includes your work history and your availability.
- Submit, then wait. If a warehouse is interested, they will contact you for an interview.
Costco’s own help page has said that if the warehouse you picked does not respond within about 15 days, your application may be opened up to other nearby warehouses. It is fine to contact those locations and say you are still interested.
Only apply through Costco
Costco does not charge fees to apply and does not hire through WhatsApp or Telegram. Scam “Costco job offers” are common. If someone asks you for money or your banking details before you have even had an interview, it is not Costco.
Tips that actually help
- Open availability matters a lot. Part-time staff often work evenings, weekends, and holidays. The more open you are, the easier you are to schedule.
- Apply before the holiday season. Many warehouses hire extra seasonal staff in the fall. Seasonal jobs can turn into permanent ones.
- Be patient and apply more than once. Costco gets a lot of applications. Many employees say it took them a few tries.
- Show you can handle physical work and people. Past jobs in retail, restaurants, warehouses, or delivery all count.
- In the interview, give real examples. Be ready to talk about a time you helped a difficult customer, worked in a team, or handled a busy day.
How much do Costco jobs pay in Canada?
Costco uses a wage scale. You start at the bottom and get raises based on the hours you work over time. This is different from many stores, where raises depend on a manager.
- Costco’s 2025 annual report says it raised the starting wage to at least $20 an hour for entry-level jobs in the U.S. and Canada in March 2025.
- In 2023, a senior Costco executive said the average hourly wage for Costco Canada was $29.76, and that a full-time cashier with six years at the company could earn over $70,000 a year.
Pay can change each year, and the exact numbers can differ by job and province. For current rates, ask the warehouse during your interview. That is a normal question.
Hourly rate is only half the story
Most new hires are part-time, and hours can be limited at first. A high hourly rate with 20 hours a week is still a part-time income. Ask how many hours new staff usually get, and how long it typically takes to move to full-time.
Is there a Costco employee discount?
No. This surprises a lot of people. Costco keeps its prices low for everyone, so staff pay the same prices as members.
What employees do get:
- A free membership. According to Costco Canada, new hires get a Gold Star membership, which is upgraded to Executive after the probation period, plus memberships for family members.
- Health and dental benefits for eligible employees, including part-time staff, such as prescription drugs, vision, and dental care.
- An employee stock purchase plan.
- Scholarships for eligible employees and their children studying full-time at a Canadian college or university.
Benefit eligibility usually depends on how long you have worked there and how many hours you work. Your hiring package will have the details.
Career growth at Costco
Costco is known for promoting from within. Many supervisors and managers started as cashiers or stockers. You do not need a university degree to move up.
A common path looks like this:
Cashier Assistant / Stocker → Cashier or Department staff → Supervisor → Department Manager → Assistant Warehouse Manager → Warehouse Manager
Moving up takes time. It helps to be reliable, learn more than one department, and tell your manager you want to grow. People who stay are often the ones who treat it as a career, not a stopgap.
Is Costco a good job for newcomers to Canada?
For many newcomers, it is one of the better entry-level jobs you can get.
Why it can be a good fit
- Pay above minimum wage from day one
- Benefits that many retail jobs don’t offer
- No Canadian degree or Canadian experience required for entry-level roles
- A well-known employer name on your resume
- Speaking a second language helps with many members
Things to think about
- It is hard to get hired. Competition is strong, especially in big cities.
- The work is physical and fast-paced.
- Part-time hours at the start may not be enough to live on alone.
- Evenings, weekends, and holidays are normal.
- You need good enough English (or French in Quebec) to help members.
Work permits
You need legal permission to work in Canada and a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Permanent residents and open work permit holders can generally apply like anyone else. International students can usually work part-time off campus during school terms, but there is a weekly hour limit. Check the conditions on your own permit, or the IRCC website, before you accept a schedule.
Costco hires a lot of people each year, but it hires carefully. If you do not hear back the first time, apply again, keep your availability open, and try more than one warehouse near you. Many people who work there now needed more than one try.
