Ontario ZIP codes by region
Ontario is the only province with five different postal prefix letters — reflecting the province's enormous size and population.
M — Toronto
Exclusively the City of Toronto. M1 (Scarborough), M2/M3 (North York), M4 (Midtown), M5 (Downtown), M6 (West End), M8/M9 (Etobicoke). The letter M is used only inside the City of Toronto. → Toronto page
K — Eastern Ontario
K1 (Ottawa city core, including K1A for Parliament Hill), K2 (Ottawa west — Nepean, Kanata), K4 (Carleton Place, Smith Falls), K6 (Brockville), K7 (Kingston). Ottawa straddles K1, K2, K4, and extends into many K-prefix codes.
L — Central Ontario
L4 (Mississauga, Brampton — one of Canada's most diverse zones), L5/L6 (Mississauga south), L3 (Markham, Newmarket), L7 (Oakville, Milton), L8 (Hamilton), L9 (Barrie, Orangeville). The L-prefix belt is Canada's fastest-growing postal region.
N — Southwestern Ontario
N2 (Kitchener-Waterloo — Canada's "Silicon Valley"), N5 (London), N6 (London), N8 (Windsor — only Canadian city directly south of the US border), N3 (Brantford), N1 (Guelph). SW Ontario has strong auto and tech industry concentrations.
P — Northern Ontario
P3 (Sudbury), P6 (Sault Ste. Marie), P7 (Thunder Bay), P0 (rural northern Ontario). The P prefix covers an enormous geographic area but low population density — some P0 codes cover hundreds of square kilometres with only a few dozen addresses.
Ontario time zones
Most of Ontario uses Eastern Time (EST/EDT, UTC −5/−4). However, much of Northwestern Ontario west of Thunder Bay, such as Kenora (P9N), Dryden (P8N) and Fort Frances (P9A), uses Central Time (CST/CDT, UTC −6/−5). Thunder Bay itself (P7) is on Eastern Time — making Ontario one of the few provinces that spans two time zones. The boundary runs through northwestern Ontario, west of Thunder Bay.
