What is a Canada ZIP code?
Canada uses postal codes, not ZIP codes — but the terms are used interchangeably in everyday search. The format is always A1A 1A1: alternating letters and digits, six characters, with a space after the third.
The first three characters form the Forward Sortation Area (FSA), which routes mail to a geographic region. The last three form the Local Delivery Unit (LDU), which pinpoints a specific block face or building.
The opening letter alone maps to an entire province. A zero in the second position always signals rural delivery. The letters D, F, I, O, Q, U are never used, because they are easy to confuse with other characters, and W and Z never appear as the first letter. The last three characters work as one unit: they are not split into separate meanings.
